“Dear God” was one of the biggest hits by the British band XTC.
The song was written by Andy Partridge for the album Skylarking, but it was left out of the tracklist due to Partridge’s own doubts about the lyrics. He feared that the song’s anti-religious message wouldn’t fully reflect the complexity of his personal views on God and religion.
“Dear God” was eventually included as the B-side of the Grass single, but the unexpected attention it received from American college radio stations turned it into a success. This led the record label, Geffen, to include the track in the reissue of Skylarking.

O tema foi escrito por Andy Partridge para o álbum “Skylarking”, mas acabou por ficar fora do alinhamento do disco devido a dúvidas do próprio Partridge em relação à letra do tema, temendo que a mensagem anti-religião que esta transmitia não reflectisse a complexidade da sua visão pessoal sobre Deus e a religião.
“Dear God” acabou por ser incluÃda no lado-b do single “Grass”, mas a inesperada atenção que teve por parte das rádios universitárias norte-americanas acabaram por transformá-la num sucesso o que fez com que a editora Geffen incluÃsse o tema na reedição de “Skylarking”.
